Mountain biking in Moab

My other interests

Here are some of my other interests and pictures of some of my outdoor travels.

Bicycling

I'm a long time roadie from when I lived back east.  Living in Montrose gives me ample opportunity for road biking around the Uncompahgre valley.  I have a decent 5.5 mile climb to the rim of the Black Canyon just outside of Montrose and plenty of wide highways and back roads around the valley.  I also enjoy some mountain biking, especially on the Uncompahgre Plateau where I enjoy a lot of wooded trails.

Fishing

I've loved fly fishing since I was a kid.  Again living in Montrose during the summer I am in easy reach of some great fishing.  There is the Gunnison river gorge, mostly accessible by hiking in.  A favorite is the San Miguel river from Telluride to Placerville.  I'm close enough to the Arkansas River that a day trip for the famous Mother's Day caddis hatch is easily done.  Then there are the monster "planks" or 10 pounder plus trout in the tail water of the Taylor Reservoir dam that I've been trying to latch into but have not succeeded in yet.

Backpacking and Hiking

I'm not just attracted to these beautiful mountains in the winter.  During the summer and the fall a back packing trip into the backcountry offers an opportunity for solitude and appreciation of nature that is somehow unattainable without being literally miles from other people.  I try to get to places I've never been to before but some places are so enchanting that I've had to return.  I could probably spend a lifetime exploring the magnificent San Juan mountains and wilderness areas.  I always go on multi-day excursions alone but have done a few day trips to the high lakes or climbing with a buddy of mine.  I've also recently taken a fondness of a fall trip to Yellowstone National Park.

Other professions

My other professions are non-seasonal.  I have a computer services business, hence my own web site.  I build and repair business PCs and networks as well as develop and host web sites.  During ski and snowboard season I generally perform just critical maintenance and emergency repairs for existing clients so that I can spend as much time on the snow as possible.  I do like to brag that the ski slopes are my winter office.  Sliding on snow in the outdoors is honestly more fun than PC stuff.
