Skiing and snowboarding teaching philosophies

I have a passion for skiing and snowboarding that I wish to share with others.  That's why I'm a ski and snowboard instructor.  I started skiing at the age of 8 in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.  In my mid twenties I started working as a ski patroller at Blue Mountain.  At that time I did some teaching of patrollers and enjoyed it.  My wife Sue, whom I met there, was a ski instructor.   In '92 we moved to western Colorado.  I started teaching skiing in addition to ski patrolling at a small mountain.  In '95 we both started teaching in Telluride and I gave up patrolling all together.

When I'm working with my guests your pleasure is my pleasure.  Your success is my success.  When you have a major breakthrough or master terrain or conditions that always intimidated you I'm enthused with you.  When you suddenly start to get your snowboard or skis to perform instead of just going along for the ride I beam with pleasure.  When I've helped you to achieve your goals I'm elated.

I don't think of my profession as just teaching someone to snowboard or ski better.  I like to think of it as sharing a love of the mountain environment so that you too may appreciate it as much as I do.  If you simply say "I want to ski or snowboard better" I can teach you to ski or ride with contemporary and efficient techniques that best utilize today's equipment designs.  However I hope you leave with something more than just better skiing or snowboarding, perhaps a  new pleasure found in this wonderful outdoor activity..

If you want to rip up the whole mountain I think that is great as I believe the epitome of skiing is all terrain, all conditions.  If you want to refine your techniques for the type of skiing you enjoy then helping you to do that is my pleasure.  If you want to learn something entirely new I get excited.  That's why I teach and I love it.
